# Configure bottle deposits

There are three steps required to set up bottle deposits:

1. Add a standard inventory item for the item with a recyclable container, e.g, can or bottle of soda.
2. Add a non-inventory item for the applicable bottle deposit.
3. Assign the applicable bottle deposit to the item with a recyclable container.

For the first step, refer to [**Add standard items**](/store-manager/manage-items/standard-items/setting-up-standard-items.md) for more information. The other two steps are described in more detail below.

## Add a non-inventory item for the bottle deposit

1. Click **Merchandising**.
2. Click **Items**.
3. Click **New**.
4. Select **Standard Item** and click **OK**.
5. For **Item Lookup Code**, enter a unique lookup code such as $0.00 Bottle Deposit.

6. (Optional) Enter a **Description**.
7. From **Item type**, select **Non-Inventory**.
8. Select a **Department** or **Category**.

{% hint style="success" %}
It is a best practice to assign a department and category to bottle deposit items, e.g., Non-Inventory/Bottle Deposit. You can use the department and category to exclude bottle deposits from store sales reports, or to create reports to track how much the store has collected and refunded in bottle deposits.
{% endhint %}

9. For **Item tax**, select **None**.

{% hint style="info" %}
Bottle deposits are not taxable in most jurisdictions. However, if bottle deposits are taxable in the store's jurisdiction, select the applicable item tax.
{% endhint %}

10. For **Price**, enter the bottle deposit amount.
11. (Optional) On the **Options** tab, select **Item is not discountable at the POS**.
12. Click **Save And Close**.

## Assign the applicable bottle deposit to the item with a recyclable container

1. Click **Merchandising**.
2. Click **Items**.
3. Double-click the standard inventory item with a recyclable container, e.g., can or bottle of soda.
4. On the **Special** tab:
   1. Click the browse icon next to the **Tag along item** field.
   2. (Optional) Click a header, such as Item Lookup Code, click in the **Find** field, and enter a search term for the applicable bottle deposit item.
   3. Double-click the applicable bottle deposit item, or select the bottle deposit item and click **OK**.
   4. For **Quantities**, enter **1**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.rmhpos.com/store-manager/manage-items/bottle-deposits/setting-up-bottle-deposits.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
